The Statue of Liberty was designed as a European ideal—in the neoclassical canon, without meaning the people who arrived in chains beneath it. This series passes the crown on.

Fragments of real history are woven into the first painting: the entrance gate of Auschwitz, Indonesian freedom fighters, lines from Victor Jara—murdered after the CIA-backed coup of 1973—and an inverted map fragment reading Gaza. Fragile gold leaf holds the layers together. The two subsequent paintings strip the composition down to the face alone: fractured, colorful even in shadow.
